Every September 18th Chile celebrates the National Holiday or, simply, “El 18”. Everbody, not just Chileans, is invited to be part of the celebrations that include “Ramadas“, improvised bars where people drink chicha (fermented grape juice), eat tons of meat and empanadas, and dance the National Dance called Cueca or Cumbia. The best location in Concepción is the Parque Ecuador. This year, Chile celebrates 200 years, so the Parliament decided Friday 17th and Monday 20th are also holidays. www.hello-chile.com
Ganz Chile feiert – ¡Feliz Dieciocho!
Jeden 18.
Only about twenty minutes from the city center of Concepción is the Reserva Nonguén. There are many paths, so visitors can go trecking, hiking and even mountain biking there and the species are almost all endemic, from the impressive Arrayán, a beautiful hardwood tree, the pudú , the dwarf deer, to the Darwin toad. You get there by car passing by the Concepción zoo, heading further on towards the reserve. If you need a car for rent, just write us a mail or click HERE.
Before getting there, you need a permit from CONAF which is free.
The Curanto comes from one of Chile´s natives, the Mapuche (mapu – earth; che – people) who live to the south of Chile. Especially Chiloé, the second biggest island of South America, after Tierra del Fuego, is famous for the original curanto which is a stew made in a hole filled with hot stones and tapped by Nalca leaves.
The curanto itself is a compound of smoked sausage, potatoes, coriander, white wine, chicken, clams and other mussels, sea squirt, merkén (chilly powder), onion and sometimes chapalele (“bread” made by potatoes). When the Curanto is made in a pot, it´s called Pulmay.
This delicious meal is available in Lenga, a coastal village only ten minutes from Concepción and all coastal villages like Tomé, Lirquén, Penco, etc.

There are two skiing ressorts in the BioBio Region, Nevados de Chillán, near Concepción, and Antuco, on the volcano with the same name, near Los Angeles. Nevados de Chillán counts on around half a dozen lifts, Antuco has about three to four T-bars.
It is said the Andes of the Bio Bio Region receive the best powder snow on the southern hemisphere.
To get to Nevados de Chillán skiing ressort, starting from Concepción, just take the Autopista del Itata, then pass through Chillán and head to Las Trancas, a village only five kilometers before the skiing ressort. Be sure you have chains or, at least, a four wheel drive as these five kilometers might be icy.
Skiing is expensive in Chile, but you can get it cheaper. If you get there on Fridays, you get two tickets for one at Nevados de Chillán if you dial *110*292# on your ENTEL mobile phone and show the incoming message at the entrance. Get also 10% discount on tickets from Monday through Thursday and 15% discount on ski rental, following the same method. Helicopter skiing is available on demand.
HelloChile recommends to stay overnight there. As the hotels are extremely expensive, we can organize you a nice, cosy appartment in Nevados de Chillán. Another alternative is to stay in Las Trancas.
HelloChile visits the skiing resort frequently, so just send us a mail or give us a call on (09) 84330101.
