Reserva Nonguén – Wildlife Preserve near Concepción

In the nearby surroundings of Concepción, only around twenty minutes from the center, is the Nonguén Preserve, a CONAF run green spot where people practice eco tourism, mountain biking, trecking, or just relax. The wildlife preserve is open Monday through Sunday from 10:00 to 16:30. Contact HelloChile for informations about the necessary permit. The entrance is free of charge.

One of Concepción´s green tourism spots is the Laguna Redonda, park- like small lake where people go jogging, mountain biking, relaxing, or just take a walk around the lake. Get there by a blue city bus called “micro” from Freire street, lines 30, 32, 41, 43, 62 and 71.

Ein touristisch interessanter grüner Punkt in Concepción ist die Laguna Redonda. Der kleine runde See ist lädt Hobbysportler und Spaziergänger zum joggen, Rad fahren, aber auch einfach nur zum Relaxen ein. Zu erreichen ist die Laguna Redonda von der Innenstadt von Freire aus, wo kleine blaue Stadtbusse, Micro genannt, direkt zum See fahren. Die Linien sind 30, 32, 41,43, 62 und 71.

Only about twenty minutes from the city center of Concepción is the Reserva Nonguén. There are many paths, so visitors can go trecking, hiking and even mountain biking there and the species are almost all endemic, from the impressive Arrayán, a beautiful hardwood tree, the pudú , the dwarf deer, to the Darwin toad.  You get there by car passing by the Concepción zoo, heading further on towards the reserve. The Andes are now covered by snow and all skiing ressorts are open. HelloChile visited the Nevados de Chillán snowboard and skiing ressort on a chilly Friday – and got useful information:

1.) 1 – day ticket price: CLP 30.000.-  (Friday offer: Get two tickets for the price of one) – Find more information HERE!

2.) 1/2 ticket available as of 12:45 – price: CLP 20.000.-

3.) Around 50% of the lifts open, could become overcrowded on weekends. Only one chair lift available for bringing you to the upper (and most beautiful) slopes.

4.) Ski rental open in the ressort, but pricy. Rent your skis in Las Trancas, about 5 km before getting to the skiing ressort.

5.) Bring warm clothes, it can get very chilly – take care in the shadow areas, the slopes might become icy!

6.) Slopes of all difficulties open, but The Las Tres Marias slope, Chile´s longest one,  closed.

7.) Snow mobile rental and cat skiing available on demand.

8.) The road to the Andes might sometimes be icy,  a jeep or 4WD pick- up with chains is recommended. Rent a car, jeep or pick-up HERE!

Die Hohen Anden im Herbst

Concepción is incredible!

Only two months after the 2010 grade 8.8 earthquake, Concepción has come back to (almost) normal conditions. The traffic is still restricted in the center as the construction works go on, but the Chilean Government sponsors the public transportation- a bus ticket costs 350.- and the Biotrén, the train between San Pedro de La Paz and Concepción, is in perfect conditions. Besides, the Ruta de la Madera is being repaired and all other main roads and highways like the Ruta 5 Sur or Panamerican Highway are not damaged. Although some appartment houses have been severely damaged, the housing situation is still good and there is a broad variety of rooms, appartments and houses available.
